The Story Behind the Destination

Wörlitz Park is a magnificent 18th-century landscape garden in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, part of the UNESCO-listed Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm. Covering roughly 112 hectares near the town of Wörlitz, it was one of the first English-style parks on continental Europe, created between 1769 and 1773 under Prince Leopold III of Anhalt-Dessau. Today, Wörlitz Park offers visitors a harmonious blend of nature and neoclassical architecture, often hailed as a masterpiece of Enlightenment landscape design.

At the heart of the park is Wörlitz Lake, a serpentine lake and canal system dug from the Elbe River’s branches. Romantic gondolas glide across the water, ferrying visitors as they did over 200 years ago, providing idyllic views of the shore. On a small island in the lake stands the park’s crown jewel: Wörlitz Palace (Schloss Wörlitz), a pale-yellow Neoclassical mansion with elegant porticos, which was the prince’s summer residence. The palace’s façade and the adjacent formal flower parterre are reflected beautifully in the lake’s calm waters. Nearby, a white Venus Temple pavilion overlooks the shore, one of several ornamental temples dotting the landscape.

Wörlitz Park is designed as a series of “outdoor rooms” and sightlines. Meandering paths lead to surprises at every turn: an orange-colored Gothic House with medieval-inspired details peeks from groves of plane trees; an artificial Volcano (built on an island known as Stein) which can be climbed to reveal panoramic views and even staged “eruptions” in historic times; and charming bridges – including a venerable suspension bridge – that connect various sections of the park over canals. Scattered classical statues, grottos, and even a synagogue (built in 1790 to symbolize religious tolerance) enrich the cultural landscape.

The horticulture in Wörlitz Park ranges from sweeping lawns with solitary oaks to curated gardens of exotic trees like cedars and cypresses brought from abroad. In spring, flowering shrubs and bulb flowers color the grounds, while summer offers lush greenery ideal for picnicking under ancient chestnuts. Educational elements reflect Enlightenment ideals: for example, there's a small working farm within the park (the Landhaus) that demonstrated innovative agricultural practices of its era.

Open to the public free of charge, Wörlitz Park is both a peaceful retreat and an open-air museum of garden artistry. Guided tours by foot or gondola bring to life the rich history of its creation. Whether one explores the rock garden around the volcano, crosses the White Bridge to the island, or enjoys afternoon tea at the English Cottage, Wörlitz immerses visitors in a time of pastoral beauty and philosophical landscapes – a true hidden gem for garden enthusiasts and history lovers alike.

Great park for walking, having a picnic or just to rest by a water body. There is parking for 5 euros. And a small eatout and restroom.

This place is excellent for a stroll and a relaxing morning or afternoon. We chose to do a gondola ride instead of a castle tour and it was probably the best choice. Our gondola guide claimed to not know much English but he gave a very knowledgeable and fantastic overview of the space, the history, and the bridges' designs in English so I would say he speaks very well! It was relaxing, and I would highly recommend this place for a tourist who is a little tired of the usual castles and cathedrals and world war 2 stops.

I recomend to visit the castle and the gothic house. The park is free, and the area is very big.
