The Story Behind the Destination
Sofiyivsky Park is a 19th-century landscape arboretum in Uman, central Ukraine. Spanning about 1.8 km², it was founded in 1796 by Count Stanisław Potocki as a romantic garden for his wife Sofia, and today it is renowned as one of Eastern Europe’s most beautiful historical parks. The design of the park follows the style of an English landscape garden, with rolling greens, meandering water features, classical statues, and architectural follies that evoke scenes from Homer’s epics.
The park’s grounds are adorned with over 2,000 species of local and exotic trees and shrubs, including ancient oaks and rare imports like tulip trees, ginkgoes, and cypresses. Visitors encounter a network of lakes and ponds connected by waterfalls and canals – notably the Upper Lake and Lower Lake – as well as a subterranean river called Acheron that can be traversed by boat. Elegant footbridges arch over streams, and winding paths lead to charming sights such as the 14-meter-high waterfall, romantic grottoes, and the iconic pink pavilion known as Flora’s Pavilion.
Throughout Sofiyivsky Park are numerous sculptures and monuments inspired by Greek and Roman mythology, reflecting the founders’ vision of recreating a classical idyll. A prominent example is the Snake Fountain (also called the Fountain of Thetis) and the carved bas-relief of Poseidon’s Trident on a rocky cliff, where water trickles over a Medusa head into a pool below. Other attractions include the Terrace of the Muses, a circular colonnade overlooking the water, and the Island of Anti-Circe which can be reached by ferry and features a temple-like pavilion.
Today, Sofiyivsky Park is a National Dendrological Park and research institute, open to the public as a living museum of garden art. It is cherished for its scenic beauty through every season – from spring blooms to autumn colors – and welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. The park is a national landmark of Ukraine, celebrated as one of the “Seven Wonders of Ukraine,” offering a tranquil blend of nature, art, and history.
