The Story Behind the Destination
Rosendals Trädgård is a charming public garden and organic farm located on Djurgården island in central Stockholm. Operated by the Rosendal Garden Foundation, this “hidden” park covers about 5 hectares and is dedicated to demonstrating biodynamic agriculture and horticulture. Rosendals has a wonderfully rustic, yet curated atmosphere – a mix of orchards, vegetable plots, flower gardens, and greenhouses that welcome city dwellers looking for a peaceful retreat among plants.
At the garden’s heart stands a cluster of historic greenhouses. One serves as a public café and bakery, famous for its wood-fired oven breads and pastries made from the garden’s produce; another greenhouse houses seasonal plant exhibitions and a plant shop selling potted herbs, flowers, and heirloom seeds. Around the glasshouses sprawls the Kitchen Garden, where raised beds and rows are brimming with organic vegetables, salad greens, and herbs in summer. Visitors can stroll right alongside flourishing kale, pumpkins, and bean trellises and see gardeners at work – an inspiring sight for those interested in urban farming.
Adjacent to the edible beds is a picturesque Orchard with over 50 varieties of apple and pear trees. In spring, the orchard is clouded with blossoms, and later in autumn, visitors can taste and even help pick the ripe fruit. Beneath the trees, wildflowers and clover grow, supporting bees from Rosendals’ own beehives (they sell artisanal honey in the farm shop). On one side of the orchard lies the Rose Garden, a fragrant area with old-fashioned roses climbing pergolas and filling neatly bordered beds – a favorite spot for picnics and wedding photographs. Nearby is a small vineyard patch, as Rosendals even experiments with cold-climate grape growing.
Rosendals Trädgård also offers open lawns and picnic areas dotted with wooden tables. A notable feature is the Plant Labyrinth, a circular garden maze of seasonally changing flowers and shrubs that children love to explore. The entire garden is managed with sustainable practices – compost piles and rainwater collection are visible parts of the landscape.
Though just a short walk or tram ride from Stockholm’s city center, Rosendals feels delightfully pastoral. In summer, the garden buzzes with workshops, guided tours explaining biodynamic methods, and a farm stand selling freshly harvested produce and bouquets of cut flowers. In winter, the greenhouses become cozy havens decorated with lights and citrus trees. Open to the public (free entry) during daytime hours from spring through autumn (with limited winter hours), Rosendals Trädgård is a beloved community space where visitors can connect with nature, enjoy fika among the flowers, and learn about organic gardening in a beautiful, relaxed setting.
